Zusammenfassung

This book explores the critical role of the construction industry in addressing global sustainability challenges. It emphasizes the transition to circular economy practices, offering theoretical insights and practical solutions to advance climate resilience, resource efficiency, and sustainable development in the built environment.

The book begins with an analysis of retrofitting skills and barriers, highlighting the need for education and training to reduce the carbon footprint of existing buildings. The book then delves into construction and demolition waste management, providing actionable strategies to overcome regulatory and infrastructure challenges. A central theme is the shift from traditional sustainability practices to circular economy models, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Later chapters explore urban resilience through nature-based solutions and collaborative governance, showcasing case studies like water-adaptive housing in the Netherlands. The book also examines the transformative potential of digital technologies, such as AI and cloud platforms, in achieving net-zero emissions and optimizing construction processes.

Written for a global audience of practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and students in fields such as architecture, civil engineering, urban planning, and environmental management, this book provides actionable strategies, foundational insights, and evidence-based frameworks, making it a valuable resource for those seeking to advance sustainable and climate-responsive practices in the built environment.

Faham Tahmasebinia is a Senior Lecturer (Education Focused) in Civil Design and Construction Management in the School of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, at the University of Sydney, where he has held academic positions since 2021 following earlier casual academic engagement from 2009. He coordinates and teaches units spanning engineering construction, surveying, and composite structures at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His research sits at the intersection of structural and computational engineering and engineering education. His structural work covers finite element modelling of composite steel-concrete systems, reinforced concrete under dynamic and impact loading, and underground ground support, while his educational scholarship examines authentic assessment, Design Thinking, and the integration of BIM, digital twins, and artificial intelligence into engineering curricula. He is professionally engaged with the Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE).

Roksana Jahan Tumpa is a Lecturer in Project Management at Central Queensland University, Sydney, Australia. Her research focuses on sustainability, social value, and diversity in project environments. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and secured competitive research funding to support research on project governance, social value, and sustainability. Roksana has received several awards and recognitions for her research, teaching, and professional contributions, including the Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Award, Walt Lipke Project Governance and Control Excellence Award, Student Voice Commendation Award, Best Paper Awards, Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Winner Award, People's Choice Awards, and Best Presentation Awards. She was also named a finalist for the IPMA Global Research Award. She has been invited as a keynote speaker and workshop presenter in Kuwait, the United Kingdom, Italy, South Africa, and Singapore and is actively involved in international research collaborations. She also contributes to curriculum development, accreditation, and academic and professional service in project management. She is a Fellow of IPMA Australia.

Samad Sepasgozar is a globally acclaimed leader ranked as the "world's top researcher" in 2025 and Australia's "field leader" in Architecture for three consecutive years (2023-2025) by The Australian. Also, recognised as "Top 30" in Building and Construction among the top 2% of researchers worldwide by Stanford University. He serves as the Sustainability Ambassador for the Sydney Hub of CIOB. Dr Samad is an academic editor for Scientific Reports (Nature) and an Associate Editor of Architectural Engineering (ASCE, Decile 1), alongside roles as a Top 1% Reviewer globally, an editorial board member, and a reviewer for 60 high-impact journals. A prolific scholar with nearly 300 peer-reviewed articles and an h-index of 47 on Google Scholar, he is also a lead assessor for national research projects on innovation and smart technologies, earning numerous international and national awards annually.
