Cuckold is a savage, often comic, literary thriller that takes us to the heart of Salvadoran politics and society during the 1970s, as well as into the mind of a man running from his inner demons. The action takes place during a moment of political upheaval that threatens the stability of the country. Clemente--a former revolutionary and recovering alcoholic, who has worked as a TV comedian and an ad man--is also a national leader in Alcoholics Anonymous and a lifelong devotee of lucha libre. He is also a philanderer, and one day falls into bed with a powerful general's wife. Cuckold follows Clement over the course of a weekend as he becomes increasingly paranoid, convinced that the general has caught wind of his affair and is tracking him down. In a frenzied, maniacal narrative that takes us inside shopping malls, markets, offices, and the crazy and compelling world of professional wrestling in San Salvador, Cuckold follows Clement's torturous path to the novel's surprising conclusion. It is one of the award-winning Horacio Castellanos Moya's greatest works to date.
