The storm has passed. Maren Shaw sits on the dock with three former students and a Honda pointed toward town. She tells them the assignment is over. She will not turn the loft into a secret she keeps in the walls of her marriage. She will not ask men of twenty-three and twenty-four to wait for her text.
They build a fire behind the A-frame. They eat. They sit in a pile on a blanket until the coals drop. Then she takes them upstairs at the same time, in the same bed, on terms she names out loud.
Dawn comes. Bags are packed. At the car she kisses them once each and tells them to be done waiting on her porch. Gravel pops. The A-frame gets small in the mirror. She keeps both hands on the wheel and goes home to the work of having finished something on purpose.
