The coded keys to a fortune are hidden on two paintings looted by the Nazis in France during WWII. A Jewish family's wealth was transferred to a vault in a Swiss bank for safekeeping before the war. April 1948, an English lord lies stabbed to death in the library of his country house. The only thing missing from his art collection is one of the looted pictures. Having discovered its secret, the gangster who sold the stolen picture to the lord came back to get it. To retrieve the fortune, he must find the second picture. He will do anything to get that one too. Just returned from Canada, Mike and Valerie look at settling down in Lewes, Sussex. Mike, an ex police detective, wants to try his luck as a private investigator finding the survivors of the recovered art. Valerie wants to use her art history degree to help Mike. They are soon caught up in finding the murderer and the real owners of the looted pictures.
