Between 1946 and 1948, postwar Chicago glitters with champagne, jazz orchestras, and packed nightclub crowds inside the legendary Palmer House. Beneath the chandeliers of the Empire Room, however, another world exists behind service corridors, freight elevators, and backstage hallways where invisible workers carry the weight of the city's secrets.
William "Sweet Brass Willy" Freeman returns home to Chicago in the summer of 1946 after serving with distinction in the 761st Tank Battalion during World War II. Decorated for bravery under General Patton, Willy expects to reunite with his family and begin rebuilding his life after the violence of Europe. Instead, he arrives to devastating news: his father, longtime Palmer House porter and gifted trumpet player Jimmy Freeman, has been murdered in an alley behind the hotel.
Officially, the investigation goes nowhere.
Jimmy spent decades working inside the Palmer House while dreaming of one day performing in the Empire Room itself, a glamorous nightclub where Black musicians were admired from a distance but rarely welcomed fully into the spotlight. As Willy accepts temporary work at the hotel, he slowly begins uncovering uncomfortable truths hidden beneath the polished elegance of downtown Chicago nightlife.
Inside the Empire Room, Willy encounters powerful hotel management figures, aging mob-connected patrons, frightened employees, and musicians who understand far more than they openly admit. At the center of the growing tension is Antonio Bruno, a volatile nightclub operator whose influence is fading alongside the old Chicago power structure he once controlled. As Bruno's drinking worsens and his behavior becomes increasingly unstable, Willy begins suspecting that his father's death was never random.
