Looking back to all that occurred to me since that eventful day, I am scarcely able to believe in the reality of my adventures. They were truly so wonderful that even now I am bewildered when I think of them.
I had my first vision when I was eleven years old. I was sitting close to the high jump pit at the Stanford football stadium. It was the 1962 USA - USSR Track and Field Dual Meet. Sports experts call it the greatest track meet of all time. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev had just spewed his famous "We will bury you" tirade. Only days before the meet, Soviets were sent to Cuba to install nuclear missiles targeting American cities. There were 103,000 screaming Russkees and Americans applauding when Valeriy Brumel the Russian high jumper cleared 7'4 3/4" in the high jump pit right in front of me for a world record.
In my mind, they were cheering for me as a future quarterback for Stanford. That was my vision. It was from God. I could feel it. From that day forward I knew that I was going to be an All American quarterback for Stanford.
