1592: Sir Robert Carey arrives in Carlisle in the Tudor Wild North to take over as Deputy Warden of the West March of England. Unfortunately there is already a Deputy Warden called Sir Richard Lowther who has no intention of letting Sir Robert do the job.

And somebody has cut the throat of the Armoury Clerk and Carey's servant, Barnabus, is accused of the murder - along with Carey himself. Can he find who really did it? Or will Barnabus swing for the crime and Carey face the axe?
